The foundation stone of a private grammar school was laid at Christmas 1445, offering the young citizens of Troyes the opportunity to receive instruction in Latin. In the 16th century, the site, already known as Hôtel de la Licorne, was converted into a municipal authority secondary school for the purpose of "educating children". In 1630, it was turned into a convent for the Sisters of the Notre-Dame congregation and subsequently the Bon Pasteur Sisters. There, they offered young girls free tuition. During the French Revolution, the building became the property of the Aube department. It was here, in 1792, that the troops of the Maréchaussée, recently rebranded "Gendarmerie Nationale", were stationed. They remained in residence on these premises until 2017.
